PATTERN: Seamless Solid Granny Square

Create a solid granny square with no holes and no visible seam! Can be used with any weight yarn, and a suitable hook size.

The silver square used about 1oz / 61 yards aran weight yarn with an H/5mm hook, to create a 9x9” square. Any yarn will work.

Pattern includes both written instructions (US terminology) and a chart of the first three rounds, and is suitable for beginning crocheters.

Pattern uses US terminology. Stitches used:
o Chain / ch
o Slip stitch / slst
o Double crochet / dc -- yo, insert hook in specified location, yo and pull up loop, (yo and pull through two loops) twice
o Triple crochet / tr -- yo twice, insert hook in specified location, yo and pull up loop, (yo and pull through two loops) three times

Notes:
• I use one fewer turning chain than is standard. If the starting corner is too tight, use ch4 instead.
• If you are aiming for a particular size, the last round may need to be worked in a shorter stitch.
• Magic circle can be used in place of beginning ring

Instructions

Round 1: Chain 5 and join with slst to make a ring. Ch3 (counts as tr here and throughout). Work [3dc, (tr, 3dc) x3] into ring; join with slst to top of ch3. End count: 4 tr (corner stitches), 12 dc (3 per side).

Round 2: Ch3, 2dc in same spot (top of previous round’s turning chain). * Dc in each dc across the row; (2dc, tr, 2dc) in tr. Repeat from * for each side, ending last repeat by working 2dc in top of previous round’s turning chain, and join with slst to top of ch3.

Repeat Round 2 to desired size. Sample repeated row 2 five more times for a 9x9” square. Each row will have four more dc per side, and a tr at each corner.

When done, fasten off and weave in ends, using beginning tail to close up any center hole.
